Temporary Vehicle Imports into the UK

A vehicle entering the UK for a limited purpose may qualify for temporary customs treatment, but the conditions depend on residence, ownership, use and how long it will remain. Cartwright CS helps establish the correct route, prepare the supporting declaration and keep the exit or discharge requirement visible.

We are Cartwright Customs Services

Cartwright CS Ltd is a UK customs broker and customs agent based in Southampton, Hampshire. We support businesses, freight forwarders, removal companies, hauliers and private clients with customs declarations, border documents and practical coordination across the UK and Europe.

Our approach is simple: gather the right information early, explain what is needed in plain English and keep the customs paperwork connected to the real movement of the goods.

Why this service matters

A temporary import is not simply a permanent import that will leave later. The customs procedure creates conditions around who may use the vehicle, why it is present, what may be done to it and when it must leave or be placed under another procedure.

How Cartwright CS helps

We document the purpose and itinerary, identify the likely temporary procedure and explain the evidence or security requirements. We keep the import and export sides linked so the temporary admission can be discharged properly.

Common challenges we solve

  • The driver, owner and importer are different parties
  • A UK resident wants to use a foreign vehicle
  • The vehicle may be sold or remain in the UK
  • The event finishes after the authorised period
  • An ATA Carnet and Temporary Admission are confused

How the process works

  1. Confirm ownership, residence, purpose, itinerary and intended exit date.
  2. Provide registration, valuation and transport documents.
  3. We identify the likely declaration or carnet route and any security.
  4. The vehicle is declared on arrival using the agreed process.
  5. Changes during the stay are reviewed before action is taken.
  6. Re-export evidence is obtained and the procedure is discharged.

Why choose Cartwright CS

A vehicle brought into the UK temporarily needs different evidence from one being permanently imported. We review the owner or user's circumstances, purpose of visit, entry route and intended departure before assessing the customs requirements.

We explain which conditions must continue to be met during the stay and what documents should be kept for return or onward movement.

Frequently asked questions

How long can a vehicle stay temporarily?

The period depends on the procedure and circumstances. It must be agreed and monitored rather than assumed.

Can a temporary vehicle be sold in the UK?

Not without addressing the customs procedure first. Duty, VAT and a change of customs status may be required.

Can a UK resident drive it?

Use by a UK resident can be restricted. The ownership, employment and use conditions must be checked.

Is a carnet always required?

No. Some movements use Temporary Admission without a carnet; others may benefit from an ATA Carnet.
