T1 Transit Documents for UK and European Movements
Moving goods across several customs territories does not always mean paying import charges at every border. A T1 transit document can suspend duty and import VAT while goods travel to an approved destination or customs office. Cartwright CS prepares and manages T1 movements through NCTS, helping hauliers, freight forwarders and traders keep cross-border journeys compliant and moving.

Why this service matters
Transit keeps customs charges suspended during the journey, but it also creates a controlled movement backed by a guarantee. The goods must follow the declared route and be presented at the destination within the time limit. If the T1 is not discharged correctly, the guarantee holder may face a claim for duty and taxes.
How Cartwright CS helps
We gather the declaration data, confirm the intended departure and destination arrangements, raise the transit movement and provide the documents needed by the driver. We also track the movement after departure. Because we are an authorised consignor, qualifying movements can be started from an approved location without routine presentation at an office of departure, subject to the required controls and prior approvals.

Common challenges we solve
- An unsuitable or unconfirmed office of destination
- Incomplete commodity, value or package data
- Drivers leaving without the correct accompanying document
- Transit movements that remain open after delivery
- Confusion between the T1, export declaration, GMR, ELO and ICS2
How the process works
- Send us the invoice, packing list, route, vehicle details and destination clearance instructions.
- We check the data, transit liability and guarantee position.
- We prepare the NCTS declaration and confirm departure arrangements.
- The driver receives the transit reference and accompanying paperwork.
- The goods are presented at the declared office of destination.
Once the T1 movement has started, we monitor its status through NCTS. If the goods reach their destination but the movement remains open, we investigate whether the goods were presented to the correct customs office or authorised consignee and whether the necessary destination messages have been processed.
Where discharge remains outstanding, we work with the haulier, receiving agent and other relevant parties to establish what evidence or corrective action is required. A T1 is not fully discharged simply because the goods have been delivered, and an unresolved movement can leave the transit guarantee exposed.

Why choose Cartwright CS

Frequently asked questions
What is a T1 document?
A T1 is a transit declaration used mainly for non-Union goods moving under customs control. Duty and import VAT remain suspended until the goods reach the destination procedure.
Does a T1 replace the export or import declaration?
No. The movement may also need export, safety and security, GMR, ELO and destination import formalities.
Do I need a guarantee?
Yes, transit movements normally require a guarantee covering the potential customs debt. We can discuss use of our guarantee, subject to checks and limits.
When is the T1 discharged?
The movement must be properly ended at the office of destination or an authorised consignee, and customs must complete the required discharge process. We monitor the NCTS status and can help investigate outstanding movements. Delivery to the customer alone does not confirm discharge or release of the transit guarantee.
Can you arrange the EU destination clearance?
We can coordinate with the receiving agent and may be able to source destination support, depending on the country and shipment.
Need a T1 transit document?
Contact Cartwright CS before the vehicle departs so we can check the route, guarantee and destination arrangements.
