Japanese Vehicle Import Customs Clearance

Vehicles from Japan often arrive with auction sheets, export certificates, translated documents and shipping records held by different parties. Cartwright CS brings the customs information together, checks whether any preferential origin claim is supportable and handles the UK import declaration and release process.

We are Cartwright Customs Services

Cartwright CS Ltd is a UK customs broker and customs agent based in Southampton, Hampshire. We support businesses, freight forwarders, removal companies, hauliers and private clients with customs declarations, border documents and practical coordination across the UK and Europe.

Our approach is simple: gather the right information early, explain what is needed in plain English and keep the customs paperwork connected to the real movement of the goods.

Why this service matters

Buying in Japan does not by itself prove Japanese preferential origin. The vehicle's origin, tariff classification and supporting statement or evidence must support any preference claim. The auction price, inland costs, ocean freight and insurance also need to be treated correctly for customs value.

How Cartwright CS helps

We give you a document list before arrival, review the export and purchase evidence, calculate the likely import charges and prepare the declaration. We then coordinate customs release and explain the NOVA step. Shipping-line and port charges remain separate and are passed on or quoted clearly.

Common challenges we solve

  • Origin is assumed from export country
  • Freight or insurance is missing from the value
  • The consignee and importer do not match
  • The vehicle is in a container requiring devanning
  • NOVA information is incomplete

How the process works

  1. Before preparing the import declaration, we normally require the Japanese export certificate, purchase invoice or auction evidence, the vehicle's make, model, year and VIN or chassis number, and the relevant shipping documents.

  2. We also establish who purchased the vehicle, who will act as the UK importer and where the vehicle will arrive. For container shipments, we check the bill of lading, container details and arrangements for unloading or devanning.

The purchase price, freight, insurance and other relevant charges are reviewed to establish the customs value. Where preferential duty treatment may be available, we check whether the required evidence of preferential origin is available; a vehicle being exported from Japan does not automatically establish Japanese preferential origin.

  3. We review value, classification, origin and any relief or preference.
  4. The import declaration and tax payment are arranged.
  5. We coordinate release and any devanning or collection requirements.
  6. NOVA and the later registration path are confirmed.

Why choose Cartwright CS

Japanese vehicle imports often involve auction paperwork, export certificates and shipping documents that must be reconciled for a UK customs entry. We help confirm the importer, vehicle identity and value, and review the evidence for any applicable origin preference.

We explain duty, VAT and NOVA within our service scope and coordinate with the shipping line or port so collection follows the correct customs-release process.

Frequently asked questions

Do all vehicles shipped from Japan get a reduced duty rate?

No. Preferential treatment depends on the product-specific origin rules and valid supporting evidence.

Do you need an English translation of the export certificate?

A clear translation is often helpful and may be required to support the declaration and later processes.

Can you arrange devanning and delivery?

We can coordinate with suitable providers and obtain transport options, subject to port and vehicle details.

Can you complete DVLA registration?

No. Our vehicle service covers customs and, where agreed, NOVA; DVLA registration is separate.
